Debunking Strength Training
Recently, it has been more widely recognized that strength training brings benefits that aren’t seen as much in other types of exercise. While cardiovascular training can torch a lot of calories, the lasting impact of resistance training makes it superior to cardio. Increasing muscle tissue (by lifting weights) leads to burning more calories at rest by increasing the resting metabolic rate. I’ve already written a blog post on why resistance training is important in anyone’s fitness regimen, but there are a lot of people that find the weight room intimidating, and this post is to address just that. Here are a few ways to ease gym jitters:
Do not go to the gym without a plan - Wandering around the gym aimlessly can be a source of stress. It’s best to go to the gym with a plan of what you’re going to do and going after it. If you are unsure about what to do in the gym with weights, there are usually trainers in big gyms that can help, as well as online trainers, and websites with workouts.
Learn the basics - In this day and age, it’s easy to pull up youtube or google searches with proper form and fundamentals. Use the tools at your disposal to set you up for success.
Stay focused by keeping your goals in mind - It can be overwhelming when you’re first figuring things out in the gym, especially when there’s an audience. Remember why you’re there in the first place, put your headphones in, and focus on the task. In all reality, no one is paying as much attention to you as it may seem.
Invest in a personal trainer/ask for help - Hiring a personal trainer gives you 1:1 help learning your way around the gym equipment, as well as gives you specific workouts that you can learn and use later. A personal trainer doesn’t need to be an ongoing expense if you don’t want it to be, but can help immensely in the learning process. If you aren’t interested in a personal trainer, gym staff are knowledgeable and can help with basic questions too.
Start small and build confidence - Don’t start by doing crazy movements just because you see other people doing it. Build up your strength and wealth of knowledge before attacking monumental tasks. Once you’re confident, go after those mountainous goals!
I fully believe that weightlifting can be the most empowering thing once it’s figured out. Once you’re comfortable with the equipment and movements, achieving your goals can be motivating, and that dedication to yourself can be the most rewarding type of self-care.
